The first legal bet in this region was on golfer Rory McIlroy to win The Masters and it was by Jim Dacey, the namesake of Dacey’s Sportsbook — the first tribally-owned casino sportsbook to open in the state of Michigan.
Why didn’t Dacey bet on his favorite NFL team, the Miami Dolphins, or even the local fan favorite Detroit Lions, to win the Super Bowl — both with long odds to be NFL champions any time soon?
“My advice to all who come here after we open this fabulous new sportsbook. Bet with your head and not with your heart,” Dacey said.

FireKeepers is seemingly betting on itself as the Battle Creek casino hosted a doubleheader on Monday, celebrating the “topping off” of its second hotel tower and the opening of the new Dacey’s Sportsbook.
FireKeepers Casino Hotel, and its owners, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, held a traditional ceremony for tribal members, executives of the casino and media, complete with a crane raising the final beam to the top of the new hotel tower, and later, a ribbon-cutting for the Grand Opening of Dacey’s Sportsbook.
“Today marked another significant step forward in the FireKeepers history,” said FireKeepers CEO Kathy George. “Two memorable events in the same day reflects the great leadership of the tribe and their focus and support, maintaining FireKeepers position as a top regional U.S. Gaming destination.”

Sports betting became legal in Michigan in December of 2019. Several Detroit casinos opened sportsbooks in March of 2020 and FireKeepers becomes the first tribal casino in outer Michigan to be open for betting.
On Monday, bettors could put money on any NFL team to win the Super Bowl. Of note, the Detroit Lions had 66-1 odds to do that. Or, as Dacey did, bet on future events such as The Masters, as well as Monday’s rescheduled NASCAR event. Even Korean professional baseball was on the board.

The sportsbook location is in the spot formerly known as Dacey’s Taphouse. Still a restaurant and bar, there are now added live wagering windows and self-serving betting kiosks, as well as big screens, on the walls with betting odds.
“This is very rewarding to me to see this come together and to have my name up there and to have them invite me back to be a part of this, means a lot,” said Dacey, a local businessman who was instrumental in getting the casino opened initially more than a decade ago. “It sends chills down my spine when I think about this.”
The new eight-story, 203-room second hotel tower expansion will also include a new gaming space and a new Nibi signature restaurant.
Jamie Stuck, Tribal Council chairperson, said the improvements and expansions are gratifying because they are— coming after the casino was shut down recently due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Coming off the shutdown, it was exciting to be able to reopen in a safe way recently and to see today come as well, with the hotel expansion and to be one of the first casinos in the state of Michigan to have bets, it’s a great feeling,” Stuck said. “This will make sports in this area more exciting. And with betting and fantasy sports, it will bring a different vibe here and a new population.
“People can bet on their favorite teams, like the Lions. Now, how they will feel on Monday mornings after games, that could be a whole different story,” Stuck added with a chuckle.
